Are teeth whitening strips safe?

Teeth whitening strips are soft plastic strips covered or dip into a thin layer of whitening gel. This gel generally contains carbon peroxide or hydrogen peroxide which is a bleaching agent. The strips are placed firmly on tooth base and held so that the gel can bleach the surface of the teeth. Though this is a very effective way to whiten your teeth and get a sparkling smile, there are certain issues that you need to consider and know before you buy a one.

  1. Gum sensitivity- due to the presence of a chemical agent for bleaching teeth, the whitening strips can make your gum sensitive. The contact of strips with gums while placing it on teeth is inevitable and can have a bleaching effect on gums also. Hence, turning gums into the painful and sensitive region under your mouth.
  2. Tooth enamel damage – excessive or regular use of whitening strips on your teeth can erode the upper layer of enamel which can thins out teeth and can permanently damage the teeth. The enamel protects teeth from external damage and strengthens them to bear harsh brushing, chemicals, and surgeries. Some companies such as Glory Smile at offer teeth whitening products made from organic ingredients.
  3. Uneven whitening – the whitening strips, however you try, will not be placed properly on teeth. Therefore, it does not cover your teeth properly bleaching them unevenly. This is not so much danger for your teeth, but it is definitely not wanted by anyone.

The above two possible threat or danger of using whitening strips make it sound dangerous. It is better to consult your dentist before using it at home. If possible, go for other dental options for making teeth white by spending little more money. Teeth are an asset for a person. It should be protected and preserved. The regular checkup and dentist consultations can make you save your teeth as well as huge money.
